What is a Rookie Mama? Well, I'm a Rookie Mama. Before we had my eldest son 7 years ago I had never changed a diaper (nappy), I'd put on a baby grow once. It took an hour, and it ended up being back to front and inside out. And for me (& my American hubby) we've pretty much been making it up as we go along ever since.
You see, parenthood, like starting your own business is a series of firsts. Every day is a new experience or challenge you have to figure out. There's usually something you've never done before, or maybe you have but this time you're gonna try and do it a bit better, a bit quicker, perhaps put that metaphorical baby grow on the right way round this time!
Being a typical British gal, I am sarcastic of wit, and humble of nature. I'm the first to initiate a bit of self deprecation for the purposes of humor (think Hugh Grant, but a girl, bit younger, and without the history of a dodgy car incident in LA!). Therefore, I am the first to call myself a Rookie.
Moving 5,500 miles from London to California in 2016 with our family was a first. My husband and I had lived in New York a few years back (Pre-kids. Social life was much more active and there were no baby grows to fight with), and therefore knew what living in the States was like. To be fair to me, my husband IS American, so he had a bit of a head start. Moving to Southern California was a whole new ball game.
We had to figure out where to live: LA vs Orange County. Where and how to school the Kids; State school, Charter school, home school...(the list goes on. There's a HUGE choice in the States). Where were we going to work, and what as (yep, we moved here with NO jobs!).
Now, just over a year into our SoCal adventure we've thankfully figured out some of the big stuff. We have a roof over our heads, we're earning money to keep that roof over our heads, and the lads are being educated (and breath!). We've even just enrolled them both in Little League baseball. THIS in itself it's a whole new ball game (pun intended), but more of that in a later post.
And so my Rookie adventures continue. If you're a regular reader of my scribblings you'll know my blog was previously called 'Surviving the Muklets'. 'Surviving' being my experience of parenthood and running a small business, and 'Muklets' being my nickname for my 2 grubby Muklets (Boys aged 7 and 4 who have the ability to cover themselves in filth and devastate a room in under 40 seconds).
So, there's a new name, but more Rookie stories in Motherhood, Small Business, and now (wish me luck!) Little League Baseball to come...
